Starting a new chapter can feel exhilarating—and overwhelming. For LGBTQ+ students, that mix of excitement and anxiety can intensify as you step into environments that might not yet feel fully safe or welcoming. That uncertainty is both normal and valid. This practical checklist is here to help LGBTQ+ new college students find community, assert your rights, and flourish on your own terms.
🏫 Campus Climate & Safety
✅ Look up your school’s non-discrimination policy (does it include sexual orientation and gender identity?)
✅ Check if the campus has a dedicated LGBTQ+ resource center or staff contact
✅ Locate gender-inclusive restrooms on campus maps
✅ Review housing policies—can you request LGBTQ+-friendly or gender-inclusive housing?
✅ Learn about how to report harassment or discrimination (Title IX office, Dean of Students, etc.)
🌟 Finding Community
✅ Search for LGBTQ+ student organizations, clubs, or affinity groups
✅ Attend a welcome mixer, orientation event, or ally training if offered
✅ Follow LGBTQ+ orgs and centers on social media to stay in the loop
✅ Introduce yourself to a friendly peer, RA, or staff member as a potential support contact
✅ Consider joining national organizations with college chapters (e.g., Out in STEM, oSTEM)
💬 Building Support Systems
✅ Identify 1–2 trusted people you can turn to for emotional support
✅ Save contact info for campus mental health or counseling services
✅ Know your rights around name/pronoun usage in class rosters, ID cards, and email
✅ Ask professors or staff for name and pronoun flexibility if needed
✅ Consider finding a mentor—either a peer, faculty member, or LGBTQ+ staff leader
📚 Academics & Advocacy
✅ Find classes or professors that include LGBTQ+ topics or research
✅ Explore ways to incorporate your identity and interests into academic work
✅ Be open (when you feel safe) about advocating for inclusive classroom practices
✅ Learn how to request accommodations or academic support if needed
✅ Save local/state LGBTQ+ legal resources in case you need them
💖 Self-Care & Confidence
✅ Make time to rest and recharge—you don’t have to be “on” all the time
✅ Remember: it’s okay to take space from people who don’t support you
✅ Reflect on what makes you feel most grounded—music, journaling, art, movement, etc.
✅ Know that your presence on campus is powerful—and you belong exactly as you are
✅ Celebrate your milestones, big and small—you’re growing every day
