Tenure, Promotion, and Review
Preparing a tenure or promotion dossier is one of the most consequential writing tasks of an academic career — and one of the least supported. Faculty are expected to narrate a coherent scholarly identity, document a teaching practice, and frame a service record for committees that may have limited familiarity with their field, under genre conventions that institutional handbooks rarely make explicit. Most faculty do this work in isolation, without access to experienced feedback, while carrying full teaching and service loads.
The dossier is a genre. It has conventions — for how a research narrative builds toward a trajectory argument, for what a teaching philosophy needs to demonstrate, for how service contributions get framed as evidence of scholarly citizenship rather than obligation. Those conventions are learnable. They are also almost never taught.
